A cinematic engagement Shoot at The Ritz Cinema, Belper
From First Date to Proposal: A Full-Circle Moment
As a wedding photographer, one of my favourite things is getting to know my couples and learning the stories that make their love so unique. Every wedding day is beautiful in its own way, but when a couple has a story as meaningful and cinematic as Maisie and Ben’s, I knew their pre-wedding shoot needed to be just as special. Keep scrolling to dive into this cinema photoshoot.
Their first date was to the cinema to watch The Theory of Everything. A sweet, simple date — until Ben realised he’d left the parking ticket behind and they had to run back in. Somewhere amidst all that, someone even stopped to ask Ben how to put their phone on silent. A little chaotic, very memorable, and totally them.
Fast forward a few years, and Ben planned the most incredible proposal. He recreated that very first date — he hired out a cinema, had them play the exact same film, and even had someone approach him asking how to put their phone on silent! When they “left” the cinema and returned to the car, he said he’d forgotten the ticket — again. But this time, when they walked back inside… there was champagne and a proposal waiting. Absolute rom-com levels of thoughtfulness.
Creating a Meaningful Pre-Wedding Shoot
Knowing all of this, I wanted their pre-wedding shoot to feel just as special and story-driven. I booked out The Ritz Cinema in Belper — an independent gem filled with old-school character — and we brought their story to life again.
There was no popcorn throwing or fake movie watching — just a quiet, nostalgic energy. Using off-camera flash to mimic the glow of a projector, I set the scene to feel cinematic and intimate. Rows of velvet seats, dramatic lighting, and just the two of them (plus me as the ultimate third wheel!!!).

Maisie and Ben — thank you for sharing your story with me, and for trusting me to bring your cinema photoshoot to life on camera.
I’m so excited to be capturing the next part of their story this month, at Swancar Farm Country House.
