Some shoots just feel extra special — not because of the location (although… hello Dolomites), but because of the people, the timing, and the story behind it all.
Billy & Em’s pre-wedding shoot at Alpe di Siusi in the Italian Dolomites was one of those moments where everything lined up in the best possible way.

We’d literally just started a three-month road trip around Europe in our VW campervan, while Billy & Em were coming to the end of theirs. So naturally, we did what any sensible people would do — met in the Italian mountains, parked our vans next to each other, let the dogs loose in alpine meadows, and chased golden light until the sun dipped behind the peaks.

Campervans, dogs, and golden hour in the Italian Alps

We spent a few days together exploring the area around Alpe di Siusi — slow mornings with a brew outside the vans, sunset walks through rolling alpine fields, and plenty of chaos courtesy of our spaniel Luna and their golden retriever Zep, who were both absolutely thriving in the mountains.

For their pre-wedding shoot, I wanted it to feel exactly like them — relaxed, playful, full of movement, and totally unposed. No awkward standing still. Just wandering, running, cuddling the doggo, spinning each other around, and soaking up the kind of views that make you stop mid-sentence and go “how is this real?”

The Dolomites have this unreal way of looking cinematic without even trying — wide open meadows, jagged limestone peaks, soft golden light — and Alpe di Siusi is honestly one of my favourite places in Europe for engagement photography and elopements because it feels wild but accessible at the same time.

Billy & Em spent most of this shoot laughing, running, and getting tackled by Zep, which is always a win in my book.

Photographing friends in the mountains (the best kind of pressure)

Billy & Em are friends of ours, which somehow makes photographing them both easier and more emotional — especially knowing that Adam and I are photographing their wedding later this year in the Lincolnshire countryside.
Getting to capture this chapter of their story, in the middle of our own road trip, felt like such a full-circle moment.

We leaned into movement, backlight, soft flares, and that slightly nostalgic, cinematic feel — plus I shot a bunch of this on 35mm film, which felt perfect for documenting such a fleeting, travel-heavy chapter of their lives. The grain, the colours, the imperfections — it all just works so beautifully with the Dolomites landscape.

This shoot honestly felt more like hanging out than working, which is exactly how I want my sessions to feel — especially when I’m photographing engagements, proposals, and pre-wedding shoots in Europe.
