A Wild & Moody Mountain Wedding at Ty Afon River House, Snowdonia

Some weddings have it all…

When you picture a wedding in the middle of Snowdonia National Park, you probably imagine rolling mountains, misty views, and the kind of moody light that makes everything look cinematic. That’s exactly what Chloe and Connor experienced during their October wedding at Ty Afon River House. It all happened on the weekend of Storm Amy, no less!

The night before the wedding, the whole village went into lockdown after the river burst its banks and the signal went out. However, by the morning everyone had rallied together. Spirits were high and hearts were full, and they were ready to celebrate in true Welsh style — wind, rain, and all.

Despite the weather throwing everything it had at them, their day was still filled with laughter, warmth, and so much love. They might not have had the mountain terrace ceremony they had originally dreamed of. However, they did have dramatic skies, mist rolling over the hills, and the cosiest, joy-filled atmosphere inside Ty Afon’s beautiful house.

Morning prep — laughter, gifts, and all the feels

The morning began slowly, with the sound of rain against the windows and the smell of fresh coffee drifting through the house. Chloe got ready with her two bridesmaids, her mum, and the mother of the groom. There was gift exchanges, a few happy tears, and plenty of laughter in their matching pyjamas.

Meanwhile, in another part of the venue, Connor was getting ready with his best men and Chloe’s grandad. He had an important job later on, and everyone was excited for the moment.
My second photographer, Hannah, captured all those lovely in-between moments. Ties being adjusted, shoes being polished, and that quiet excitement before everything begins.

By the time Chloe stepped into her dress, the mist outside had lifted just enough to reveal the incredible Snowdonia mountain views through the window. It felt like the perfect calm before the storm — literally.

The ceremony — indoors, intimate, and full of heart

When the weather made their planned outdoor terrace ceremony impossible, Ty Afon River House and Helen provided the perfect Plan B. Inside, the ceremony room glowed with warm light and beautiful floral arrangements by Bluebells Floral Design. These framed Chloe and Connor beautifully as they said their vows.
One of the sweetest touches was having Chloe’s grandad act as ring bearer. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room, and afterwards people kept talking about how special that moment was.
You could feel how much love surrounded them, not just from each other but from their close-knit group of family and friends who had all travelled up from Kent to be there.

Confetti, bagpipes & Welsh rain

After the ceremony, guests braved the stormy outdoors for confetti!
As everyone spilled out, they were greeted by the sound of bagpipes — a surprise organised by the couple to lead the way for their guests. It was such a joyful, goosebump moment against the dramatic mountain backdrop.
We managed to sneak out for a few portraits before the rain returned, making the most of that soft, moody light that North Wales does so perfectly. Even in the drizzle, Chloe and Connor looked completely at ease — just two people soaking in every second of their day together.

Reception — heartfelt details & homemade touches

Inside, the dining room looked stunning.

Every table was styled with care and filled with personal details. Welsh slate hearts carved by Chloe’s dad, and crocheted sheep made by Connor’s mum (complete with tiny baby versions for the pregnant guests!). It was such a beautiful mix of thoughtful and quirky — exactly like Chloe & Connor themselves.
Guests enjoyed a drinks reception with delicious canapés before sitting down to some heartfelt speeches. Everyone laughing and tearing up in equal measure, followed by a hearty meal by Cheeky Chilli Caterers.
As the storm picked up again outside, everyone gathered in the lounge with coffees, letting the evening roll in slowly while the venue got ready for the party.

Wedding portraits with the Snowdonia Mountains

Despite the wild weather of Storm Amy, we still managed to sneak away for a few precious minutes of couple portraits. Just before the next band of rain rolled in, we headed out into the grounds of Ty Afon River House. (The bits that weren’t flooded!!) The moody Snowdonia mountains creating every wedding photographer’s dream backdrop.

The clouds were low, the wind was wild, and it felt dramatic and romantic all at once. The perfect North Wales mountain wedding vibes. We had around ten minutes before the heavens opened again, but that was all we needed.
Chloe and Connor laughed their way through the gusts, cuddled up against the cold, and embraced the beautifully ‘perfectly imperfect’ weather that Snowdonia does so well. Those portraits, with the dark rolling hills and swirling mist, are some of my favourite images from the day – proof that you absolutely don’t need sunshine for magical wedding photos.

Party time (and a power cut!)

When it was time to dance, DJP Mobile Discos had everyone on their feet — even when the power cut out later in the night! In true “nothing can stop us” fashion, the party kept going with a Bluetooth speaker and a lot of laughter.
Guests waved glow sticks, kids joined the dance floor, and Chloe and Connor didn’t stop smiling all night.
We even managed to sneak outside for sparklers before the next downpour. The perfect ending to a day that proved that even wild weather can’t dampen the joy of a wedding this full of love.

Planning a wedding in the North Wales mountains?

This day was a total reminder that sometimes, the most memorable weddings are the ones that don’t go exactly to plan. Moody skies, wet shoes, and all — Chloe and Connor’s day at Ty Afon River House was magic from start to finish.
